So I thought this guy at worked liked me?

This guy(Danny) would always make an effort to talk to me when we worked. Or even on our 15 min break he'd always like sit next to me while we were outside smoking. I started to like him more and more, then he got laid off and I was bummed because i never got to hang out outside of work with him and I didn't have his phone number. So like three weeks go by and randomly one of his other friends from work came up to me and said "Danny wanted me to give you his phone number" which seriously made my day I was ******* elated. But due to my sucky phone i was going to wait to call him until I got a new one. Two weeks went by and i couldn't take it anymore, I just had to call him, so i did, but he didn't pick up, so I left a message. He never called me back! So then I was like ok whatever maybe he'll just call back in like a week or something, but he didn't so I was like ok I'll just move on. Then another one of his friends randomly came up to me and said the same thing, danny wanted me to give you his number. And I was like wtf? So my question is, if he made the effort to tell these people to give me his number why isn't he calling me back?
