Will Vitamin E oil really help my split ends?

I have REALLY frizzy straight hair that has A LOT of split ends and it's VERY long, bellow my belly on long. I have a lot of split ends from the top of my hair all the way down so getting just "a trim" is out of the question. I was wondering if applying 4000 UE vitamin E oil all over my head, leaving it on for an hour or so, and then washing it out with shampoo and conditioner (Mane n Tail) would make it appear less frizzy and rough? I already know about washing in cold water but that doesn't help now that I already have too much damage, please help me?
